The story is Alexander got so impressed he married a local, and his army settled.

I forget the number, but he built a number of cities too.
He married a Central Asian woman because he wanted to unite greeks and Central Asians. The logic was that if his heir had both Greek and Asian blood, then both people should accept him preventing future wars.

And he renamed cities after himself, he did not build them.

He did build cities. The exact number I'm not sure about, I've heard things from 19 to 80 new cities. But fact is he did make new cities, some of which are population centers today.

They also needed troops, so this was a good way to improve morale, and motivate the Persians, Afghans, Pakistanis, etc to be part of the army.

Wikipedia is not a good source. In you link it says that ai hanoum was founded by alexander but this link of wikipedia says that it was founded before that:
Ai-Khanoum - Wikipedia.

Even Alexandria, Egypt predates Alexanders time:

However, more recent radiocarbon dating of seashell fragments and lead contamination predate this claim by two millennia [4]
Wikipedia also says this
Quote:
Alexandria in Arachosia was a city in ancient times that is now called Kandahar in Afghanistan. It was one of more than seventy cities founded or renamed by Alexander the Great.
He renamed many cities after himself and claimed they were greek cities.

There were no such thing as a pakistani back then. Pakistani is a british creation.

Did you click on Kandahar? What about the other cities? Some places, like Alexandria, a city was built even if there was a small dwelling nearby.

People also think that it is named after Gandhara civilization but none of these theories are certain. No Greek Architecture has ever been found in Kandahar.

Nobody thinks that.

The founding by Alexandar is widely mentioned. I've never heard claims of it being dubious.
