In shocking scenes, exposing the widespread anger towards the migrant crisis, private citizens tied up several Afghans and ordering them "back to Turkey".

The men have been described as "true patriots" by an overwhelming number of Bulgarians for their actions.

An opinion poll the national television channel showed that 84 per cent of the viewers supported the idea that vigilantes should be recognised and supported by the government.

However, human rights groups have condemned the "border brigades" for tying up the migrants hands and forcing them onto the ground.

In the viral video, the gang can be seen standing over three Afghan migrants as one tells them in broken English to return to Turkey.

The migrants had managed to sneak through the Turkish border despite a 95km razor-wire fence seperating the two countries.

The country, on the frontline of Europe's migrant crisis, recently announced that 300 army officers would be sent to the border.

However, voluntary border patrols have been gaining popularity in Bulgaria, with groups of ordinary people detaining migrants and handing them to the authorities.

In a poll reacting to the video an overwhelming number of Bulgarians supported the actions of these vigilante patrols.

The chief of Bulgaria's border police Antonio Angelov even admitted that although the arrests were "somewhat illegal", he praised their bravery.

He even gave a similar group earlier in the week an award for rounding up 23 migrants in a nearby woods - including two children.

The country's prime minister Boyko Borissov also called up these vigilante patrols to thank them personally.

Borissov said: "I sent the director of Border Police to meet with them, so as to co-ordinate the signals and what they need.

"The state is ours, together. Anyone who helps deserves only a thank you"

The government added that help from citizens is "always useful" but warned it was better to help police lawfully.

Critics have said authorities are turning a blind eye to the situation, with Angelov confirming he "could not control the volunteer corps".

Human rights group, Bulgarian Helsinki Committee, said that it was extremely unacceptable Angelov had presented an award to the vigilante group named “Organisation for the Protection of Bulgarian Citizens”.

The group's letter read: “What kind of leaders are those that allow and even encourage such usurpation of their statutory powers?

“Every Bulgarian citizen has the right to walk in the state’s forests. Stopping migrants and alerting the police is our civic obligation."
