This is the ramblings of a fool.
Science is based on materialism. He fudges the meaning to have it mean "nature" but what is nature? A thing that is hard to define anyway.
It all started as Philosophy, and the branches of knowledge expanded from physics, chemistry, to biology, and the last one psychology.
The reason why he feels so out of place and outdated is because none of the disciplines mentioned by him have a way of bringing about all the knowledge we have under One theory of everything. This is the task of the philosopher.
It is pitiful that he wishes to validate philosophy as a shade of science, when the reverse is more true. Even more pitiful that philosophers these days have no understanding of the advances in the sciences, and have turned inward, searching meaning in language...in dictionaries.
It's empty rhetoric.
