so i just thought this would be an interesting topic to talk about since there are many different opinions.

I would rather remain home with my lovely parents. I can't go a day without speaking to them. How could I possibly go an entire semester without them?

Yeah, I don't think many of us would enjoy moving out.. sometimes it's inevitable. I know many many people who live in dorms/apartments during the week or from Monday-Thursday and go home on weekends. It's nice, especially if you'd have a long commute. But probably nothing for me. I get all teary and emotional when I don't see my dad for a day or two.. can't possibly move out. Who's gonna poke him randomly if I move out?!

Are you asking us what SHOULD they do? Or what they typically do? Or what their options are?

Because what they "should" do is entirely up to them and their families and would vary from situation to situation. For instance, if the university you wanna go to is really far from your house and you and your family believe that it's excellent enough for you to attend even if you're not living at home, then obviously you would move out temporarily.

I don't know of ANY family -- whether Muslim or non-Muslim, Pashtun or non-Pashtun -- that believes in moving out permanently. I'm sure there are some, but I just haven't met any, and none of my friends "move out" move out.

Personally, I believe it's okay to live away for a little while. For those of us who get sick of our families, we'll learn how to love and appreciate them more. Of course, we all love our families tremendously, but sometimes we don't know how to show our love to them -- and being away from them gives us ideas of how to do that. Not only for matters of love, but you also learn to figure out "life" on your own because you're given a better chance. I mean, paying bills, renting apartments, waking up on your own, making your own meals, etc. ... provided you still don't rely on your parents to do all of this for you, of course.

If I end up going to a university that's far from my house, I'd willingly live there but visit my family on vacations (and on weekends as well, if convenient). But since I'm currently going to one that's hardly 15 miles from my house, I'd much rather drive daily. I, too, have realized I can't live without my mom: when she was in Swat without me last year, I was in hell! And letting my parents EVER be on their own? Never would I let that happen. They're going to live with me after I get married; it won't be the other way around, and I will not give them any other option. But fortunately, at this stage in their lives, they can take good care of themselves and are not that old, so if any of my siblings or I were to be away from them, they'd still be fine, as long as we called them every single day (when my sister forgets to call them any day and they're unable to reach her that day, they start panicking and imagine the WORST possible things Adorableness).

But, yeah, education is important, and many families acknowledge that and are willing to let you stay away from them for a few years if necessary. Just don't do it if your parents depend on you to take care of them. That's selfishness right there, I say.

No that's not necessarily true, some of the most decent and religious girls I know live in apartments.. The thing is, the apartments aren't too far from their parents house, maybe 1-3 hours.. but the traffic to and from school is SO horrible that it makes it impossible for them to live that far. They'd be wasting 24 hours a week just driving to school and back =/

Financial aid is pretty awesome. I'm waiting for my check, it's probably gonna come late though

Fortunately also, you don't have to be a U.S. citizen to get financial aid; you can be a "permanent resident" (i.e., have a Green Card) and still get financial aid, at least according to FAFSA.

But some scholarships require that you be a U.S. citizen.

And, yeah, it's certainly a blessing. I hope we're all taking good advantage of it and are not abusing this privilege that our people back home are denied just because they're not us. So put your education to good use.
