Default War dance of Afridis - 07-21-2017, 11:10 AM

While searching for the content for my facebook page , i came across this Afreedi [Afridi] War Dance (Watercolour) | V&A Search the Collections

Early 19th century water colour painting of Afridi war dance (Attan). Unfortunately images of some of the paintings are not uploaded on the site including this one. Its very interesting find because Pashtuns of upper KP and upper FATA where Attan is absent , refuse to believe that their ancestors ever had tradition of Attan. They argue that they never had the tradition of the Attan to begin with. Afridis of today dont do any kind of Attan. I believe they have lost the tradition of Attan with time , same is case with Yousafzais, Mohmands etc.

On facebook, many Yousafzais responded to me that they are 'drana' Pakhtuns, they look down upon men doing any kind of dance.......but i think these responses are stemming from ego issues. Attans of the Pashtuns are rooted in warring and are as manly as its gets, nothing to do with damtob

I wonder how a tradition like attain could fade within 100-200 years. Also it's strange how among some tribes attan has become somewhat of a "spaka khabara" while in others it's such a deeply-embedded tradition that I have seen videos of elders doing it.

A well executed attan is truly amazing to watch. I'm not talking about the crap you see nowadays.

I doubt the honesty of those youngsters in giving me such inputs.......i suspect their superiority or inferiority complex on this matter. Responses of their grey beards, not tainted with nationalism, will be interesting to hear.

And within 100 or 200 years , tribes have lost their languages .... losing just a custom is not surprising at all.

I'm interested. What was the process of these tribes losing their language and why did they abandon it?

people who think attan is dhamtob are out of their mind.
Attan is national dance in Afghanista and its never seen as something dishonourable.
people who would never dance will participate in attan.
in afghanistan every one participating in attan and have accepted it as part of the national fabric.

i guess patans want to hasting wiping out Afghan culture of their ancesters and replace it with degenerate paki culture.

Maajara, dont spread fasad here. Dont see this thread as a chance to attack Pakistani Pashtuns, its not about attacking certain tribes. Attan is also absent in your Kunar

And Kona-rri (کنړي), wake up and smell the coffee , Afghanistan is also plagued with mujras , for example
