Molecularly speciation is the formation of a new gene which becomes so different in the population that it no longer transmit the old genes to offspring. That's why quite often when you have a horse and donkey mate, they form a mule, the mule is sterile. It has information coded which is no longer compatible either of the original species.

a female mule can sometimes reproduce with a hinny. that is not sterile.

that's the keyword, that's why I said often, not always, but the rate and frequency of reproduceability is not nearly as great as those mating from either parent species ....agreed?

haha... that was from a quick google. well you taught me something now. i never knew about the mule not being able to reproduce with another mule and never heard of a hinny before.

well eventually species become so differentiated that they can no longer mate, but mating and the ability to with parent species demonstrates genetic drift
