A friend loves asking people he knows to see me and guess where I am from..almost 99.9% of the time they are completely lost haha. So far nobody abroad who has been asked to guess has gotten the answer right. My father faced the same all his life, as have my aunts and uncles living in the West. Its really quite bizarre as its not as if we look out of place at home either.
From complete strangers I have gotten Lebanese, Turkish, Pakistani, South American, Italian, Jordanian, North Indian and Afghani, while casual acquaintances almost always assume I am Pakistani until they find out the correct answer. I guess what they really mean is Pashtun?
The only giveaway is my height, as I am not very tall. Other than that I have beige-olive skin, thin pointy nose and reddish brown, very straight hair and brown eyes, and my cheeks go blood red in high altitudes [i don't know if that's relevant in any way, just another odd trait]....while my father and some of my cousins are tall, fair, with golden brown hair, pale [amber, grey and green] eyes and 'parrot beak' noses.
The reason I went into some detail about our appearance is to dispel how some people here seem to assume how Bangladeshis look. I'm glad some of you have reason to feel you are somehow superior looking than most of my Dravidian countrymen n women, never mind the fact that over there we find that some of them are a thousand times more striking and beautiful than us Pashtun, Arab and Portuguese descendants, but it's interesting to see the irony in how such racist views are entertained in a forum that celebrates Pashtunwali
