Default Islamic Dress - 10-09-2017, 12:55 AM

One of the signs that Islam is strong in a certain country is the dress. You will find that Islamic dress is very strong in Afghanistan and Yemen, but most of the rest of the Muslim world has pretty much adapted European dress or other styles of dress which are more cultural than Islamic. Women should obviously go back to veiling and burqa and stop the European and un-Islamic fashions. Men too should stop wearing European dress. Islamic dress is what Prophets wore, such as shawls with fringes, skullcaps or turbans, long Qamees (frock or Thobe), not the modern Pakistani version of shelwar kameez, looser shelwar, modest colors (white or black). Men should also keep a handful length beard, mustache, and Zulfain (long hair). Why to adapt colonial European style of shortly cut hair and shaved beard? Covering head with a skullcap is the best way a person is identified as a Muslim, so why to go bareheaded in imitation of Europeans?

How do you say that what Muhammad PBUH wore is an islamic dress. he wore the same before islam too. the big kafir of makkah wore the same dress. it is an arab dress. dress is a culture thing and as long as it is modest it is islamic.

Because Muslims were Arabs and wore standard Arab dress, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم instructed them to distinguish themselves in some way. For example he encouraged them to wear white clothes more. He told them not to wear silk, not to wear saffron. He also wore his turban in a distinctive way (with two ends hanging loose). He did everything to make as much difference as possible, such as dying white hair with henna. From this we derived the principle that we should try our best to look and dress differently than other people. This is why I said we should not follow European fashion but keep a distinctive style of dress which resembles the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam). You will note that now most of the world follows European fashion, including Chinese, Indians, Africans, etc. Therefore, Muslims should not adapt European dress but adapt that dress which is associated with Prophets and Saints, i.e., Qamees, skullcap, turban, shawl, or cloak.

agree that we should not adapt european dresses, but adapting dress you refer as islamic dress is less islamic and more arab dress and it will be considered as arab cultural hegemony. and islam will be seen as arabic colonization. we should adapt our own traditional dresses, providing that it is modest, similarly we should avoid silky dress or any other dress code forbidden in islam.

I don’t think it is Arabic cultural hegemony. Actually, vast majority of Prophets were Israelites. If you want to follow their style of dress why not? The Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) favorite dress was the Qamees. This is a long frock that comes above the ankle. In Pakistan our “national dress” is shelwar kameez, but this is not a dress associated with religious people. Hence even in Pakistan you will see that spiritual leaders like Pirs etc. were long Qamees like Arabs and maybe also a cloak or chola. Religious Afghan people also wear a much longer kameez than the standard size. Now it is in the Sunna that as men we have to keep our lower garments above our ankles. So if you are wearing a standard shelwar and you raise it up above the ankles it may sometimes look too funny or odd. But if you wear a long qamees that is above your ankle then it looks normal. This is how standard Pakistani national dress should not be considered as Islamic dress. Another thing is that sometimes I see standard Pakistani national dress as not being formal enough. Many people in Western countries think they are nothing but pajamas for sleeping and laugh at such a dress if worn in public. So it is better to wear an Arabic style long Qamees or Thobe that looks more formal but at the same time is not European.

Short cut hair is not European style. neither is shaved beards. some of you forget to think logical sometimes. But I agree beards look good in general, at least those who can grow nice beards.

People in this region always wore variety of color clothing. It has a certain aesthetics. the black and white code of Arabs looks depressing.
