Islam is a religion, but not in the western meaning of religion. The western connotation of the term "religion" is something between the believer and God. Islam is a religion that organizes all aspects of life on both the individual and national levels. Islam organizes your relations with God, with yourself, with your children, with your relatives, with your neighbor, with your guest, and with other brethren. Islam clearly establishes your duties and rights in all those relationships.
Islam establishes a clear system of worship, civil rights, laws of marriage and divorce, laws of inheritance, code of behavior, what not to drink, what to wear, and what not to wear, how to worship God, how to govern, the laws of war and peace, when to go to war, when to make peace, the law of economics, and the laws of buying and selling. Islam is a complete code of life.
Islam is not practiced in the mosque only, it is for daily life, a guide to life in all its aspects: socially, economically, and politically. Islam is complete constitution. Thus Islam keeps the Muslim away from confusion, because Islam is logical and rational. Allah is one. Allah is one Allah has no sons. Allah is not associated with trinity. Allah does not kill to save. No mediation is required between Allah and man. Islam organizes human nature, but does not go against it. There is not a class of clergy in Islam; nor is there celibacy. Islam is complete way of human life.
The Qur’an says in Surah 57, verse 25: *{We verily sent Our messengers with clear proofs and revealed with them the scripture and the balance [i.e. the authority to establish justice], that mankind may observe justice and the right measure…}* Then in Surah 12, verse 40: *{The command is for none but Allah; He has commanded that you obey none but Him; that is the right path.}* Also, in Surah 22, verse 41: *{[Muslims are] those who if We give them power in the land, establish [the system of] salat (prayers and worship) and zakat (poor due) and enjoin virtue and forbid vice and evil.}* The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“Everyone of you is a keeper or a guardian and will be questioned about the well-being of the people of the State. Every man is a guardian to his family and will be answerable about every member of it. Every woman is a guardian to the family of her husband and will be accountable for every member of it. And every servant is a guardian to his master and will be questioned about the property of his master.” |
Religion is universal not eastern or western. If Christianity is between man and God(super natural entity or concepts like Nirvana) the same is oriental religions like Hinduism, Buddhism etc. All religions are basically originated in the East but now present every where. So there is no special connotation of religion in the West.
I don't know any Islam which completely guides its followers in all aspects of life. Can you quote any period of time where this complete code of life was implemented at all levels including political levels. Except the first few years where Arab traditions were mixed with religion and we have the period of the so called pious caliphs. Even majority of these caliphs were killed by their fellow Muslims and for the power game even grand sons of the prophets were brutally killed.
Whatever you quote from Quran about family matters, social affairs or few political guidelines , all these are just moral injunctions and not at all complete family, social, legal or political codes. Do Muslims have a single codified law like penal codes, criminal codes, civil codes, constitutions, international law or political/economic theories like capitalism, communism, socialism, social contract etc. Not a single one.
Yes I agree Islam has complete guidance in all religious matters like beliefs, worship and ethics. If you read Quran more than 95% its about beleifs, modes of worship and morality and few injunctions with moral under pinning in the fields of politics, economics, society or law.
Personally I dont believe in any hadith which is not according to Quran, reason or any religious aspect of life. All hadiths about politics, economics, law etc are fabricated and manipulation of Ummayads, Abbasids etc to prolong their political despotic rule. People like Imam Abu Hanifa never joined government circles and always separated religion from politics. This secularism will save today's Islam too.
