Default Traditional Pashtun Art - 03-27-2012, 04:42 PM
Hello, I am a huge art buff! I'm trying to find art that's strictly Pashtun. I've looked at some embroidery and some paintings like truck paintings and also some basket weaving. I know there has to be more than what I'm finding I would really appreciate any leads in the right direction.

Arts and craft are generally appreciated in Pashtun society but the artisans are usually non Pashtun as this is considered lowly work. you will see Pashtuns listening to music but they refer to the singers as dum (derogatory term). Ofourse pashtuns sing in weddings but when its done professionally for money, it is see as dishonerable. Pashtun usually import outsiders such Indians for such type of work. In pashtun society traditionally only tradesmen, warrior and land ownership are considered worthy occupations. Attitudes are slowly changing though and professionals like doctors, engineers are gaining respect with more education.

thats singers and dancers mostly entertainment that have taboo attached to it except for attan which is respected.
Poetry, paintings, woodwork, fashion, pottery, calligraphy, embroidery etc are all art but they are respected

What slowly changing????
Doctors and ingineers were alway seen as worthy and had a lot of respect epicially doctors, in pashtun society even teachers are seen as intelectuals, I don't know where you get that only land owners, tradesmen and "warriors" are are seen as worthy????

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.
