KABUL (PAN): New equipment has been installed at the Baheer Computerised Printing Press, enabling the press to print 230,000 copies of books in 24 hours, officials said on Sunday.
The equipment cost 13.5 million US dollars, head of the Baheer Printing Press, Sherbaz Kameen Zada, told participants of the inaugural ceremony.
He said they could now print 230,000 books, newspapers, magazines and brochures in 24 hours with the help of the new machines.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister of Commerce and Industries Anwarul Haq Ahadi praised the contribution of the press to the national economy. "I can say with confidence that printing presses can contribute significantly to Afghanistan's economy."
The minister added 400 million dollars had been invested in the printing press to provide job opportunities to about 30,000 people across the country over the past five months.
"The press has printed books of high quality for the education ministry. On the other hand, the books published in Indonesia and Pakistan had poor quality," said Sidiq Patman, deputy minister of education.
Baheer Printing Press has been operating in Kabul for more than 19 years, with as many as 206 employees, including eight foreigners, Kameen Zada said.
