PressTV - French soldier killed in Afghan war (

A French soldier with the US-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has been killed in a militant attack in Afghanistan's northeastern province of Kapisa.

The soldier was shot dead on Wednesday by militants as he accompanied an Afghan army unit on an operation, AFP cited a statement released by President Nicolas Sarkozy's office.

The latest deaths bring to 75 the number of French soldiers killed in Afghanistan since October 2001, when the US-led invasion of the country began, according to a tally by Agence France-Presse.

France reportedly has around 4,000 military servicemen in Afghanistan, supporting the US-led operations in the war-ravaged country.

According to official figures released by the website, a total of 421 foreign troops have lost their lives in war-battered Afghanistan so far this year.

Nonetheless, 2010 remains the deadliest year for foreign military casualties with a death toll of 711. The number eclipsed the previous record of 521, set in 2009.

More than 2,702US-led soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since the US-led war began in the country nearly 10 years ago.

The security situation remains fragile in Afghanistan despite the presence of about 150,000 US-led foreign forces.

The increasing number of military casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.
