IN THIS THREAD ONLY LINGUISTIC DISCUSSION MAY BE CARRIED OUT,NO POLITICAL OR ANY OTHER KIND OF DISCUSSION MAY BE ALLOWED PLEASE

GENERAL

There are two main dialects in Pashto language.

Hard dialect: spoken in areas like Peshawar, Mardan, Swat, Malakand, Dir, Kohat, Paracinar, Jalalabad, Bajawar, Mohmand, Khyber, etc mainly in northern part of Pashto speaking areas. Here the pure Pashto words are pronounced as kh and g not sh and j if the

The word for fine is pronounced as kha not sha. The word for beard is pronounced as gira not jira.

Soft dialect: Spoken in Kandahar and ares like Banu, Karak, Waziristan, Baluchistan, Paktya etc. Here the above sounds are pronounced as sh and g . Fine is sha here and beard is jira here.

I will try for your orientation of both the dialects or accents.THERE IS NOTHING TO DO SPECIAL .Often the symbol/ in this course denotes the difference of dialects. However it is not necessary to learn both the dialects as both are easily mutually intelligible. Accents of Qandahar and Peshawar or Mardan are the standard accents through out the world.

Remember that both the dialects are written in the same script . Thats why you see special Pashto letters for khe and ghe.

General

Pashto is the national language of Afghanistan and one of the two official languages(the other one is Dari). Thus we see particular words used there which has no so much currency in Pakistan as here Urdu or English words are dominant. As we saw above the actual pure word for university is pohantoon. Similarly for hospital the word is roghtoon but to many Pashtuns in Pakistan these words are not known because in Pakistan the official language is English or Urdu and the languages of sign boards , business, mass media and written communication.

Whats the formal way of saying Good bye, see you tomorrow.
Pashtuns usually dont use frequently salutaions like HI, HELLO, SEE YOU etc.

For example for "hi" there is no specific word and as English has invaded other languages similar is the case with Pashto. Educated Pashtuns most of the times use the same hi. Some times KHA/SHA CHAREY is also used for HI. As we know hi is the informal form of how are you , in Pashto you may come across the phrase SANGA CHAL DAY< HOW ARE THINGS

This is very interesting that among the Pashtuns the use of Mearbani or manana is not that much frequent as it is in other languages because Pashtuns are more intrinsic people. For them external courtesies are not that much important.

In a Pashtun village you may carry a mountain for a person but when you drop the mountain you will hear nothing from that Pashtun even not a single word of thanks as he is obliged internally , in his hearts of hearts and for him/her just to say a few words will make the importance of the task lesser. Few words are not equivalent for the great task done and another aspect is that Pashtuns are by nature gregarious and social people . it is routine to help others, why to thank? saying manana is just exhibitionism <showsha for them.

The word manana is now getting currency. Previously it was not that much common. In Pakistan some times shukrya and mehrabani are also used for thanks which is Urdu influence while in Afghanistan you may also hear Tashakur which is Persian influence.

A model dialogue

Palwasha. pakhair raghlay(mostly in northen parts) or starhi mashay(mostly in southern parts)=welcome

Zarghuna. dera manana/ dera merabani( the original Pashto is manana). (elder people may pray only here as may say loi shay<have a long age< or khuday de ubakha/sha< God may pardon you<etc

Now silence or other usual conversation

DA KHUDEY PA AMAN-PA MAKHA DE KHA/SHA-PA KHUDEY SPARALEY-kor de wadan=GOOD BYE
SABA BA SARA WINO= SEE YOU TOMORROW

No words are usually used like in English you are welcome after thank you.

General

Admn Khan is trying to provide the Pashto recording and Pashto written sentneces here in these lessons.

For having a good accent and correct pronunciation of Pashto language it is necessary to listen the native speakers or at least media. You can find Pashtosh programs on almost all important radio and tv stations as BBC, VOICE OF AMERICA, RADIO CHINA, VOICE OF GERMANY, KABUL , PESHAWAR, ISLAMABAD, QUETTA, GULF etc etc. PTV national has many hours of Pashto programs. TV sHAMSHAD AND KHYBER TV are also Pashto channels. You can find many of them on internet also.In Afghanistan majority of the Tv Channels have Pashto telecasting.

For good pronunciation it is must that you talk to Pashtuns

It is not difficult to find a Pashtun , they are every where and they are famous for their hospitality

Just go and say

how are you ----------- sanga ye

I want to learn Pashto------- za Pashto zda kawal ghwarham

Will you give me time for some practice... ta ba mala da mashq da para sa wakht rakey?

why not .......... waley na

Home work Please post at least 10 new Pashto adjectives
and use them in Pashto sentences.

ANSWERS

2. write all the pronouns of pushtu and use in sentences( IN PUSHTU). < da pushtu tol zamirona olikay aw pa jumlo ke ye istimal kai

Za > Za JanaanGull Yem

TA > Ta zama da zrra sar yeh

Moonga > Moonga dilta Pukhto zda kau

Haghai > Haghai Pa Pukhto na poigi

Haghay > Haghay halak zama der pokh malgaray de

Hagha > Hagha jeenai zama khor da

Again there is a mistake in the above question regarding the use of pronoun...(The red highlighted one"
The pronoun Haghay can be used as follow:s
Haghay: Haghay mata darogh ooway...ya ...haghay ta pakhto na warzee etc.

and your sentence in correct form will be: Hagha halak zama der pokh malgaray dey...

so friends this is the point where u should work hard..
am pointing to these small mistakes so that others can also improve...

I have given the geo synonyms for some of the words above with the symbol / and in red. Its very interesting that this way we are familiarizing to other Pashtuns words which are not used in a particular dialect or area. This shows how rich is Pashto.

Also please note that Pashtuns usually living in small houses/homes are not very habitual of using words for different parts of a house as dining room, drawing room. A traditional Pashtun house consists of a room(kota) or rooms(kotey) a mandaw(space outside the rooms) and a gholey(yard or sihan)

In Afghanistan its usual to use persian words for various sections of a house while in Pakistan Urdu has the same influence but this trend must be discouraged and pure Pashto words may be used instead.

Lesson no 9

Verb and tenses

Verb is considered to be the most important part of speech. It tells us about noun or pronoun, what they do or how they exist.Verb determines person, mood, tense, perfection or continuity etc.

Infinitive < masdar

In Urdu or Persian we also call it masdar. In English it is preceded by to as to go, to eat, to sit etc. In urdu its symbol is na at the end of the word as jana, khana, bhetna etc, in Persian its symbol is n at the end of a word as raftan, khurdan, nashistan etc

In Pashto its symbol is L at the end of the word as

tlal < to go

khwarhal<to eat
Lambal > To take a bath

Achawal /aghundal > To wear

Lustal/Lwastal > To read

Leekal > To write

Oodakeedal/khobedal > to sleep

khandalkhandeedal > to laugh

jarhal/Jarheedal > to cry

Mrheedal > To Die

khenastal< to sit

to read, Lustal/ Lwaslal.... to wash, Weenzal.... to stand, Udreedal... to get up,Paseedal./jagedal.. to fly, Alootal... to draw, Aks jorhol... to become, Jorheedal... to catch, Neesal./niwal.. to give, Warkol... to bring,Rawastal/rawrhal... to leave, Prekhawdal... to learn, Zda kol.... to start, Shuroo kol... to continue,Shuroo saatal... to offer, Warkol..... to try, Koshish kol... to ask, Tapos kol./pukhtal..

Kol is also read as Kawal

Infinitive then takes many shapes as we use verb in different places

Badlun
05-27-2010, 09:44 PM
Tense shows time of action or existence, like many languages Pashto has 3 major tenses

present<<<<<<<<< oosanai zamana/da wakht
past<<<<<<<<<<<<< tera shawi zamana/ter shaway wakht
future<<<<<<<<<<< rarawana zamana/rarawan wakht

Present tense

Present indefinite tense

I eat <<<<<<<<<za khwram
we eat<<<<<<<<< mong/j khworo
you eat<sing.<< ta khwray
you eat<plural.<<< taso khwrai
he/she eats <<<<<< hagha khwree
they eat<<<<<<<<<< haghoi khwree

I go home > za korta zam

He/she goes home > hagha korta zee

They go home. > Haghoi korta zee

We go home.> Moong korta zoo

You (sing) go home > ta korta ze

You (plu) go home > Tasu korta zai

The verb go tlal in Pashto is a bit different ,IN the sentences above the masdar tlaal has very different shapes zam, zoo, zey, zee

to learn < zda kawal it is a compound verb made of two words

I learn, za zda kawoom

we learn, mong/j zda kawoo

she/he learns,hagha zda kawee

they learn, haghoi zda kawee

you learn (sing),ta zda kaway

You learn (plural) taso zda kawai

masdar to see < katal again like tlal ,katal has very different shapes

I see, za goram< in southern parts you may also here za kasam for za goram and so on

we see, mong goroo

she/he sees, they see, haga/ haghoi goree

you see(sing.), ta goray

you see (plural) taso gorai

to live < jwand kawal or jwanday kadal or jwand terawal

I live, za jwanday yam

yam is translation for am in English and so on and its exact translation in English will be I m living (person)

we live, mong jwandee yoo

she/he lives, hagha jwanday day/ da

they live, haghoi jwandee dee

you live (sing.), ta jwanday ye

Youu live (plural) tasoo jwandee yai

to cook is pakhawal

I cook,za pakhom

we cook, mong pakhawoo

he/she cooks, hagha pakhayee

they cook,haghoi pakhayee

you cook (sing), ta pakhay

You cook(plural) tasoo pakhawai

In English we have only one change for he/she as eats not eat but in Pshto we see that masdar khwarhal takes different shapes according to the person as khwram, khwroo, khwray, khwrai, khwree.

For learners it may be a bit difficult but with practice it will be ok. Think about your first language, there will be also such changes in the infinitive.

Yes daram is laram or darlodam in Pashto

Okay, are there any more examples? I find learning Pashto easier when i can relate it to Dari. That is how my dad teaches me, he helps me to relate it as how i am speaking in Dari. That definitely helps me out with the verb conjugation

Salaamoona!
Well Shlombay did a good job by making corrections.....hmmm but still there are some correction needed i will make these although they are minor still i think correcting them will be useful for pukhto learners: here they are:

Happy<khushala…za der khusala yam che ta dalta raghaley dey…I am very happy that u have come here.

Sad<khapa….mata waya ,che ta ma sara khapa na ye….tell me, that you are not angry with me..

Hot<sor….dodai der sor da, awo ma der wagay yam….food is very hot, and I am very hungry

Far<Laray..Pohanzai zama kor da/la der laray da..university is very far from my home..

i might make a lot of mistakes but u know that one learns by making mistakes..:winkwink:

In the first sentence "ye" should be used, not "dey"...it will be: Za der Khushala yam che ta dalta raaghley ye"

In the second one "na" should be used instead of "sara" the sentence will be: mata waya/oowaya che ta zama na khafa na ye...

I think the correct word for "Hot" is "Toodh" in pukhto not "sor"(meaning red)...so it will be:Doday dera toodha da, au za der wagay yam"(note that "dera" will be used as there is "da" not "dey" for doday(feminine"

Pohantoon zama da kor na der laray dey....so it is "na" not "da/la"

yeah. I speak this dialect. I say niether خه as the yousfuzai say, or شه as the kandaharis speak. I say ښه. Is this the formal correct dialect. Because I speak as it is written. Because Dari speakers also speak as they write their language while Iranians have an accent. Because instead of naan they say noon.

Yeah, the ښه is the correct way to say it, or well the formal way. Here's an example:

The addition of the voice recordings is a great step forward in the development of this course. I am sure one day this course will be the best Pashto course through out the word.

Please dont write short sentences. Write a little longer sentences and try to write both English and Pashto sentences or only Pashto sentences in roman as well as Pashto script.

^Which dialect do you speak? I have been trying to improve my Pashto.

There is a detailed discussion on the two Pashto dialects in Lesson No1 above. However here we are trying to use both the dialects. Also if you learn any dialect you can learn or understand the other one very easily. We may not emphasize too much this dialect issue. Pashto is one language with little differences of accent, dialect, intonation, vowel sounds, and geosynonyms.

^your setneces are very short.
make longer sentences..

try to write a paragraph
the sentences are small cause here the emphasis is on learning simple present tense.. so understanding the ending of the sentence is important...
but insha Allah will try to post longer sentences...

i have understood very well the endings of the masdar/verbs.... as it would be when referring to 1st person, 2nd or third person.....
as in
za....am
mong.....oo
hagha....ee
haghoi...i
ta.....ye
taso...yai

but my biggest confusion and doubts till date remains the same.....
like each verb is changed differently like....
weenzal for 1st person becomes weenzam.... quite understandable
udredal for 1st person becomes udregam......
paseedal become pasam...
alootal is alwazam...
aks jorhol becomes aks jorhowam
jorheedal becomes jorhegam
neesal becomes neesam
warkol becomes warkom
Prekhawdal becomes pregdam

in all the cases different verbs end differently... i am trying find an explanation here as to what leads to changes in the individual verbs....

In almost all languages of the world , we have regular and irregular verbs. As in English we make the 3 forms of the verb usually by adding ed at the end but we have verbs like GO which is totally irregular and the the forms are go-went-gone not go-goed-goed

Similarly the endings of the verbs in sentences with pronouns also differ. In English it fiffer only with HE and She as he goes, she goes but with all other pronouns its GO. In Spanish it is different for all pronouns as ir(to go) is voy, va, vas, vamos, van. In Pashto tlal(to go) becomes zam, zi,zey,zu,zi.zai.

Thus go/ir/tlal , as well as alwatal, jorhedal, prekhawdal/prekhal/preshal etc as given above are irregular verbs and the only way to master irregular verbs is to listen/read them again and again (practice) and memorize them without waiting for any symetry , systematicity or regularity according to a rule etc.

For example for the above mentioned verb likal….. the endings are underlined

And "khwakhwal" as "khwakhol" like Za 'khwakhom'

The above verbs can be summarized as follows

verbs> lwastal, wayal, awredal, mena kawal, khwakhawal

za / lwalam, waim, awram, mena koom, khwakhom

mong /lwaloo, wayoo, awroo, mena kawoo, khwakhawoo

hagha/haghoi/ lwalee, wayee, awree, mena kawee, khwakhawee

ta \lwalay, way, awre, mena kaway, khwakhey

taso\ lwalai, wayai, awrai, mena kawai, khwakhawai

Please have such practice with other verbs

QUESTION You have said that 'wayal' is sometimes used in place of 'lwastal'. lwastal means to read. wayal mean to speak. Please clear this I am confused.
and how do we come to know how the verb changes as u have corrected

Masdar – awraidal….اورېدل

I listen –Za Awram…زه اورم

We listen –Moong Awroo….مونږ اورو

He/she listens –Hagha Awree…هغه اوري

They listen –Haghoi Awree….هغوی اوري

You listen (sing.) –Ta Awray…ته اورې

You listen (plural) –Tasu Awrai…. تا سو اورﺉ

Here the verb awraidal changes to awram, awroo and so on. and the alphabet 'd' does not occur. I understood as the facilitator had written the guidelines for the verb to change. but in this case the verb itself changes. So how do we come to know?

Answer Language is a living entity it is what the people speak . It is what how it is used

Remember grammar should never be perspective it is descriptive. Yes it is colloquial to use wayal for lwastal. We will discuss such things in an advanced level.

For awraidal again the verb is irregular try to learn and use as it is

as in English

add added added

but

do did done

no logic but it has to be used as it is.

Our next tense is present continuous tense . If you have learnt present indefinite. continuous is not at all a problem

Home Work. please write a small paragraph in Pashto with English translation and use Simple present tense.

Very good, Spogmai! Thank you very much for writing that!

za har wraz sahar wraz pohanzai ta zam … I go to college every early morning

Hara? or har? (Since "wraz" is feminine -- e.g., "Nan da sa wraz da?" ("What day is it today?")

pa pohanzai ki lectures awo meetings sara ma der masroofayam …. In the college I am very busy with my lectures and meetings

I may be wrong, but I think the part in blue should read: za dera masroofa yam. No? Or was it a typo? (In case it was a typo, the only reason I'm pointing it out is because this is for learning Pashto. Please forgive me if you disagree. Manana.)

Za bearta razam awo khpal mor sara pa pakhlanzai ki dodai pakhawam....

Nice! I say "borchikhana" (from "bawarchi khaana" in Urdu). I'm going to start using Pakhlanzai instead now.

hum zama malgary sara khabrey kom….also I talk to my friends.

Malgary = friends only when you're saying something like, "My friends came to my house." (In Pashto, zama malgary zamung kara raghalee wu.) If you wanna say, however, that "I talk to my friends," then it would/should be:

Da khpal malgaro sara khabare kom ("malgaro").

At least this is what I think/thought it is. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Please avoid one liner messages in this topic as here we may develop a comrehensive and systematic Pashto course.

If you talk of geosynonyms like akhistal, ranewal etc then please have a little time and describe the geosynonym you use in your area in detail and give some examples and other relevant explanation. This way we will have a good descriptive piece of linguistic knowledge.

Also if possible and if we have only one liner message then we may translate our messages in Pashto and this way the learners will have material for practising Pashto reading.

Osho, is there any other difference between sheen and kheen dialect?

Actually there is no such a terminology as sheen-sheen dialect but usually the linguists use soft dialect for sheen-je pronounced Pashto in southern Pashtunkhwah as in kandahar, Quetta, Paktya, Waziristan, Bannu, karak and hard dialect for kheen-ge sounds as used in Northern Pashtunkhwah as Jalal abad, Kunarh, Peshawar, Kohat, Bajawarh, Swat, Mardan etc. Some discussion is availabe in the start of this course.

The difference is mainly in these two sounds(khin-shin and je-ge) and few geosynonyms which are different Pashto words for the same noun or verb used differently in different areas but all are Pashto words. No one can say that my dialect or geosynonym is better than some one else.

For a learner this dialect issue is not at all important. Have a grasp on any of the dialect and use the dialect as it is frequently used in your family, peer groups or town or city.

Revision

REVISION /SUMMARY OF THE PREVIOUS LESSONS

IN LESSON NO. 1 we discussed pronouns of Pashto language which are the following

I .......................ZA. WE.....................MONG/J.YOU.SINGULAR....TA

YOU PLURAL........TASO.HE/SHE...............HAGHA.THEY..................HAGH OI

.ZA HALAK YAM....... I AM A BOY.

HALAK..................BOY.

YAM............................. AM

For details please go to lesson no.1

Practice and CORRECTIONS OF MOST COMMON MISTAKES

za num sanam da < Zama noom Sanam de (noom is masculine) for 'I' should be za for "my" is Zama, > zama plar pukhtoon de

taso zama dost dee < Taso zama dostan/Malgari yai ( plurarl) or Ta zama dost/malgaray yeh

da gloona khayasta da > da Guloona khesta di (guloona is plural)

zama ror khesta de

haghoi kha sarhee dee

za pakhtoon janai yam > 'Pukhtoon' is for masculine for feminine should be 'Pukhtana' > Za pukhtana jeenai yam

za lagya yam Pashto zda kawam

hagha lagya da chocolate khwree

ta yow kha halak de. < Ta yo kha halak yeh
Aimal awo Jannan zama ustaad dee< ustazan dee <plural

Smiley zama kha dost da <dosta da <feminine but in Pashto it is more common to use the word malgari or andewal for dosta

Za pf.com mina kawam< za (da )pf .com sara mina kawom/koom. we have to use two prepositions da ,sara meaning with here .

Prepositions will be discussed later on

Za Aimal sara mina kawam/kom > I love (with) Aimal
The written sentence should be , Za da Aimal sara mina kawam

Zeb zama malgaray de > zeb is my friend

Use of prepositions is unique for each language as we trust in GOD in English but in Pashto za pa khudai yaqeen koom pa means on not in and some times a preposition may be used in one language but not in other as the above example

The word "noom" is masculine so at the end of a sentence "de" should be written not 'da'

e.g. Sta sa noom de?

Zama noom JG de not zama noom JG da

or Zama noom sanam de

Guloona singular is Gul

Present Continuous Tense OR Present Progressive Tense

In Pashto present indifinite tense is used both for indifinite and continuous as

I write za likam

I am writing za likam

but some times to specify the continuity of the action the verb lagya kaidal is used in its different shapes . lagya means doing or busy and kaidal means to do

The infinitive kaidal then takes the following shapes

za / yam( za yam as a seperate sentence means I am and so on *

mong /yoo

hagha\haghoi dee

ta / ye

taso /yai

For example

za lagya yam likam \I am writing

mong lagya yoo likoo\ we are writing

hagha/haghoi lagya dee likee \he/she/they are writing

ta lagya ye likay\ you are writing

taso lagya yai likai \you are writing

Note that endings of the verb likal are exactly the same as in present indifinite tense and the same is true for all verbs only lagya kaidal is inserted but it can also be avoided and for both indefinite and continuous the same indifinite can be used

Please note that this is the most difficult stage in learning of a language but we cannot do with out it. Many are discouraged when they reach to the stage of verb and tenses. I remeber how with difficulty I learnt verbs of spanish but now I m used to it

Some more prctice of present continuos tense

verbs jarhal to weep, khandal to laugh, aghostal, to wear, manda wahal to run\manda means race and wahal literally means to beat it is a compound verb

za \lagya yam \jarham, khandam, aghondam, manda waham

mong\lagya yoo \ jarhoo, khandoo, aghondoo, manda wahoo

hagha/haghoi lagya dee\ jarhee, khandee, aghondee, manda wahee

ta\ lagya ye\ jarhay, khanday, aghonday, manda wahay

taso\ lagya yai\ jarhai, khandai, aghondai, manda wahai

To listen click here:ADE_manda_wahai.wma

Please note that the only difference between indifinite and continuous here is the verb lagya kaidal , if we delete lagya kaidal then it is the same indifinite . kaidal means to be done or to be

to wear > Aghundal is also read and spoken as Achawal or Achol

I'm wearing my cloths >Za lagiya yam jaame/kaley aghundam/achawam/achom

I'm reading a book > Za lagya yam kitab lwalam/wayam

I'm fishing > Za lagya yam mahee/kaban neesam

I'm translating > za lagya yam tarjuma/jabarha kawama/koma

I'm dancing > Za lagya yam gadegam/nasegam/ghorzam

I'm telling a lie > za lagya yam darogh wayam/wem

I'm telling the truth > za lagya yam reeshtiya wayam/wem

aghondal, achawal are synonyms and achawal and achol and similarly aghondal and aghostal are geosynonyms i. e. synonyms which are found in different speaking areas of a language

A conversation in present continuous tense;

Ammi: Jg sa ke lagiya ye ? (what are you doing Jg)

JG : Ammi za lagiya yam sabaq wayam (mother i'm reading)

Ammi: na, maata khu dase lagi che ta lagiya ye lobeh ke /kawey(no, it seems to me that you are playing

JG: na Ammi ogora kitab meh makhay ta prot de ao za yeh lwalam/lagya yam lwalam ye ( no mother, see the book is in front of me and i'm reading it)

I am reading ------ za lagya yam lwalam

we are reading------mong lagya yoo lwaloo

he/she is reading -------- haghaa lagya dee lwalee

they are reading ------ haghoi lagya dee lwalee

you are reading (sing.)------ta lagya ye lwalay

you are reading (plural)----- taso lagya yai lwalai

I am eating ------- za lagya yam khwram

we are eating ----- mong lagya yoo khwroo

he/she is eating --- haghaa lagay dee khwaree> Corr. "Hagha lagiya da khwree"

they are eating ----- haghoi lagya dee khwaree

you are eating (singular) ------ ta lagya ye khwray

you are eating (plural) --------taso lagya yai khwarai

he is eating --- haghaa lagya de khwree
she is eating ...hagha lagya dah khwree

they are eating ----- haghoi lagya dee khwree

you are eating (plural) --------taso lagya yai khwrai

The verb khwarhal means to eat and the verb khwarawal means to feed. Note the verb endings for khwarawal to feed

za khwaroom, mong khwaraw, hagha /haghoi khwarai, ta khwaray, taso khwarawai

Please note

For the english verb is in Pashto we use day for mesculine and da for feminine and dee\are \ for plural . when he and she to gether then dee as for they

sarhay day... , khaza da ... , sarhee dee ...

sarhay lagya day ... khaza lagya da..., sarhee lagya dee....

using ''bad'' means that at some point you actually liked what you are talking about, where's kraka would mean that you always hated it

hope that makes snce

Badlun
06-15-2010, 11:56 PM
You can say bad ratlal or nafrat right?

bad and nafrat are not pure Pashto words while kraka is a pure Pashto word.

Pashtuns also use bad ratlal, badi kedal, nafrat kawal, na khwakhawal.khwashawal, bad katal , bad khkaredal-shkaredal etc also for hate.

Iqra

Sha ...I looked it up in a dictionary, but that I'd ask because nafrat is actually what I've heard in like hindi/urdu.

Thanks for clarifying. =)

Present perfect Tense

So far we have studied two tenses of Pashto

Present indifinite tense as I write za likam , we write mong likoo,he/she/they write hagha/haghoi likee, you write ta likay, you write taso likai

and Present continuous tense as I am writing za lagya yam likam , we are writing mong lagya yoo likoo, he is writing hagha lagya day likee, she is writing hagha lagya da likee, they are writing haghoi lagya dee likee, you are writing ta lagya ye likay, you are writing taso lagya yai likai

Now we shall discuss present perfect tense

I have written a letter< ma yaw khat likalay day

we have written letetrs <mong khatoona likalee dee

he has written a letter< hagha yaw khat likalay day

she has written a letter <haghay yaw khat likalay day

they have written letters <haghoi khatoona likalee dee

you sing. have written a letter< ta yaw khat likalay day

you pl. have written letters< taso khatoona likalee dee

Some more sentences in present perfect tense

verb to go tlal

za talay yam <I have gone

mong talee yoo <we have gone

hagha talay day <he has gone

hagha talee da <she has gone

haghoi talee dee <they have gone

ta talay ye <you have gone

taso talee yai< you have gone

Explanation of Present perfect tense

Present perfect tense is some what complicated. Verb takes different shapes as usual so pay attention to the endings of verbs

For example in english we say

I have come

In Pashto we translate this as

za raghalay yam

here za is for I, raghalay is for come but for singular masculine person yam is for have but for singular person

if I is a feminine singular then in Pashto we will say

za raghili yam , here raghali instead of raghalay which is masculine

similarly the verb ratlal to come will change according to person

I have come < za raghalay yam/za raghali yam

we have come < mong raghali yoo

he has come < hagha raghalay day

she has come < hagha raghali da

they have come < haghoi raghali dee

you have come < ta raghalay ye /ta raghali ye for feminine

you pl. have come < taso raghali yai

In English we see only change of have and has but in Pashto we have many changes

For example for have we have these words

yam for I

yoo for we

day for he

da for she

dee for they

ye for you sing.

yai for you pl.

Similarly the verb ratlal to come also takes different shapes as

raghalay for masculine sing. you and I

raghali for feminine sing. and for plural (they), and you plural

Please note these and practice

Try to post ur sentences in this tense and let us correct if there are mistakes

First try in Pashto and if not at all possible then write in English and let us translate for u in Pashto

For further guidance more sentences in present perfect tense

verb rasaidal to reach ( rarasaidal means to reach here dalta and rasaidal means to reach there halta)

I have reached < za rasaidalay yam

we have reached < mong rasaidalee yoo

he has reached < hagha rasaidalay day

she has reached < hagha rasaidalee da

they have reached < haghoi raseedalee dee

you have reached < ta rasaidalay ye

you have reached < taso rasedalee yai

to reach there (halta) means rasaidal

to reach here (dalta) means rarasaidal

For example

I have reached here za dalta rarasaidlay yam

I have reached there za halta rasaidalay yam

More sentences in present perfect tense

verb skhal to drink

I have drunk water < ma ooba skhalee dee

we have drunk water < mong ooba skhalee dee

he has drunk water <hagha ooba skhalee dee

she has drunk water < haghay ooba skhalee dee

they have drunk water <haghoi ooba skhalee dee

you have drunk water<ta ooba skhalee dee

you have drunk water <taso ooba skhalee dee

as I have already explained above this tense is complicated in Pashto

note above some exceptional changes

in I have drunk water not za but ma another form of pronoun za

for have all the verbs are dee as it depends on ooba which is plural

I have gone to Peshawar .. Za Pekhawar la-ta talay yem

We have gone to Peshawar... Moong Pekhawar la talee yu

He has gone to Peshawar... hagha Pekhawar la talay de

She has gone to Peshawar. hagha Pekhawar la talay da

They have gone to Peshawar.. haghoi Pekhawar la talee di

You(sing.) have gone to Peshawar .. ...Ta Pekhawar la talay -talee yeh

You (pl.) have gone to Peshawar Taso Pekhawar la talay yai

NOT Za khwralee yam..BUT.. Ma khwarhalay da (dodai)

Mong khwralee yoo... Moong khwarhalay da

Hagha khwralay day... Hagha khwarhalay da

Hagha khwralee da..... Hagha khwarhalay da

Haghoi khwralay/khwralee dee... haghoi khwarhalay da

Ta khwralay/ khwralee ye... Taa khwarhalay da

Ta khwralay/khwralee yai.... Pl. Taso khwarhalay da

NOT Za yaw kitab lwlaee yam >BUT Ma yo kitab lwastalay de

Mong yaw kitab lwalee yoo > Moong yo kitab lwastalay de

Hagha yaw kitab lwastalay day Hagha yaw kitab lwastalee da

>Kitab is masculine should be no change with above sentence. hagha yo kitab lwastalay de

Haghoi yaw kitab lwalee/lwalay dee > haghoi yo kitab lwastaley de

Ta yaw kitab lwalee/lwalay ye .. Taa yo kitab lwastalay de

Ta yaw kitab lwalee/lwalay yai... plural.. Taso yo kitab lwastalay de

Question I did not understand the sentence in case of za ooba skhalee dee.Ma obo skhalee di' .In other sentences we consider whether the doer is a male or a female but in this case ooba which is plural is considered and the masdar skhal changes to skhalee. In this case why the doer is not considered whether a male or a female. Thats why I didnt write the sentences for I have drunk tea. Can u plz explain.

ANSWER_ THIS IS WHY I SAID THIS TENSE IS COMPLICATED AND NEEDS LOTS OF PRACTICE

First in Grammar there is no answre for why as Grammar always describes how the users use a language

for example no body can answer this that why

he has gone but

I have gone

we have to learn and practice how the language is used by the native speakers yes there are some rules but there are always exceptions

for verbs like to drink, skhal, eat etc when followed by an object as meal or water or tea etc , it is always the object which bring changes in the verb not the subject/doer , he she etc

for example

I have drunk tea for all pronouns will be translated as

ma chai skhali da , mong chai skhali da , hagha chai skhali da , haghay chai skhali da , haghoi chai skhali da , ta chai skhali da ,taso chai skhali da

because chai tea in Pashto is feminine and matraial noun . in some parts of Pashto speaking areas tea is masculine and you will listen

ma chai skhalay day and so on

Present perfect Tense

NOT Za khwralee yam..BUT.. Ma khwarhalay da (dodai)

NOT Za yaw kitab lwlaee yam >BUT Ma yo kitab lwastalay de

I have drunk tea for all pronouns will be translated as

ma chai skhali da

because chai tea in Pashto is feminine and material noun . in some parts of Pashto speaking areas tea is masculine and you will listen

ma chai skhalay day and so on

Osho... in the above Present Perfect Tense discussion.......ma yaw khat likalay de and likalay de will be same for all pronouns cause kitab is masculine.....

lewanai Anjlai or Jinai, or Injlay or Jinkay (all geo synonyms for girl in Pashto)

means crazy-mad-naughty girl. Lewanai literally means mad but it can be used in positive sense or for love too as naughty or crazy.

zda kawal ..to learn ..is a compound verb and its present perfect tense is

ma jaba zda karhi da
hagha jaba zda karhi da etc etc

Present indefinite tense will be
za jaba zda kawum
hagha jaba zda kawi etc etc

kenastal is to sit , its present perfect tense will be

za nast yam masc za nasta yam ,,fem
ta nast ye , ta nasta ye
hagha nast dey, hagha nasta da etc etc

its present indefinite will be
za kenam
hagha keni etc

ghag kawal is again a compound verm which means to call
ma ghag karhey dey
hagha ghag karhey dey etc and
za ghag kawum
hagha ghag kawi etc

samawal means to correct but in present perfect tens eit becomes a compound verb and its endings are like this
ma sam karhey dey
hagha sam karhey dey etc
in Present indefinite it will be
za samom
hagha samawi etc

Its grammar and the verbs must be taken as these are used by the native speakers. There is no logic but may be learnt as it is. Practice is what we need to learn the structural aspects of a language.

Tense shows time of action or existence, like many languages Pashto has 3 major tenses

present<<<<<<<<< oosanai zamana/da wakht
past<<<<<<<<<<<<< tera shawi zamana/ter shaway wakht
future<<<<<<<<<<< rarawana zamana/rarawan wakht

Present tense

Present indefinite tense

I eat <<<<<<<<<za khwram
we eat<<<<<<<<< mong/j khworo
you eat<sing.<< ta khwray
you eat<plural.<<< taso khwrai
he/she eats <<<<<< hagha khwree
they eat<<<<<<<<<< haghoi khwree

I go home > za korta zam

He/she goes home > hagha korta zee

They go home. > Haghoi korta zee

We go home.> Moong korta zoo

You (sing) go home > ta korta ze

You (plu) go home > Tasu korta zai

The verb go tlal in Pashto is a bit different ,IN the sentences above the masdar tlaal has very different shapes zam, zoo, zey, zee

to learn < zda kawal it is a compound verb made of two words

I learn, za zda kawoom

we learn, mong/j zda kawoo

she/he learns,hagha zda kawee

they learn, haghoi zda kawee

you learn (sing),ta zda kaway

You learn (plural) taso zda kawai

masdar to see < katal again like tlal ,katal has very different shapes

I see, za goram< in southern parts you may also here za kasam for za goram and so on

we see, mong goroo

she/he sees, they see, haga/ haghoi goree

you see(sing.), ta goray

you see (plural) taso gorai

to live < jwand kawal or jwanday kadal or jwand terawal

I live, za jwanday yam

yam is translation for am in English and so on and its exact translation in English will be I m living (person)

we live, mong jwandee yoo

she/he lives, hagha jwanday day/ da

they live, haghoi jwandee dee

you live (sing.), ta jwanday ye

Youu live (plural) tasoo jwandee yai

to cook is pakhawal

I cook,za pakhom

we cook, mong pakhawoo

he/she cooks, hagha pakhayee

they cook,haghoi pakhayee

you cook (sing), ta pakhay

You cook(plural) tasoo pakhawai

In English we have only one change for he/she as eats not eat but in Pshto we see that masdar khwarhal takes different shapes according to the person as khwram, khwroo, khwray, khwrai, khwree.

For learners it may be a bit difficult but with practice it will be ok. Think about your first language, there will be also such changes in the infinitive.

osho IM proud of you! spogmay make me proud too. what your doing there is not easy.

Pashto verbs are difficult, many special forms, dialect differences can also be confusing, strange constructions, so many times present past this and that, then comes the hardest thing - the ergative construction.. i say "Hagha de nan akhbar weylayda"eed

Weeda and uda for one who is sleeping are geosynonyms. Both are correct. Again makham and masham are the difference in hard and soft dialects.

shawey yam and sawey yam are a little accent differences. Some Pashtuns specially in kandahar and Quetta use soft SIN for SHIN.

To read is LWASTAL in Pashto but as explained somewhere else Pashtuns are not generally READERS but SPEAKERS thats why To read LWASTAL is used as TO speak WAYAL. Pashtuns should change their habits and may also read not only speak the language. In Pakistan specially reading and writing of Pashto is almost extinct.

Akhbar wayal ,,to speak newspaper does not seem correct semantically but pragmatically its correct.

Bakhana ghwarham for the silly mistakes that i made.....but its really difficult to know which verbs are going to be compound and which not.....as u mentioned earlier that there no rules to understand this...its onlypractice that helps....but atleast we need to know the compound verbs in present perfect tense...

Since i am finding it difficult to understand which verb take compound shape in Present Peferct Tense, i thought of writing all verbs that we have studied so far in Present infinitive, Present continous andPresent perfect tense...

it will also help in a comparative study ofthese three and also oneby one we will be studyieng and will understand as to which verb is compound in Present Perfect Tense....

will tryto cover as many verbs as possible.....which can be by hearted then (no other option left)...of course without your generous help this wont be possible....
thanks for being so patient and helpfulllll....

it will take time but isnt impossible at all...regular participation will make it faster.....

how to say,

"how is your grandmother feeling?"

Sheen dialect please.

sta nya sanga mahsusawi.....will be the literal translation but the same you can also express sta nya sanga da...how is your grandmother

I dont think Sheen dialect has any thing to do with such sentences where there is no word having the letter KHIN,SHIN or GE.JE . These kind of sentences can be expressed in many ways depends on an indivisual or a regional use of expression of a particular situation, context or mood. Other friends may also try to translate it in their own way.

Along with Spogmai we may also have more learners here. Please join and share your comments and questions.

Learning tenses is very important and once you learn tenses and use of different forms of verbs then 60%work is finished

Some more sentences in Present Perfect tense for practice.

Dodai is feminine . With more practice and eagerness you will also be able to distinguish every single word whether its masciline, feminine, singular or plural. keep practising.

Ma Pukhto zda kerhe da > I have learnt Pashto

Ma da Quran sabaq welay/wayali de > I have recited Quran

Ta darogh weli/wayali di > you have lied

Haghoi ooda shewi di > they have slept

Taso paseedali yai > You (pl.) have got up

Zama ror raghalay de > my brother has come

Sta mor talay da > your mother has gone

You (sing.) have cried..ta jarhali/jarhalay ye < Ta jarhali di

You (plural) have cried.taso jarhali/jarhalay yai < Taso jarhali di
questions of sanam

I have drawn........Ma aks jorhali yam INCORRECT< Ma aks jorh kerhe de

I have cooked food..ma dodai pakhali da < Ma dodai pakh kerhe da

I have cried.ma jarhali yam > Ma jarhali di

QUESTION In the above sentences 'kerhe' is used . what does it mean.

in the dodai sentences I understand that dodai is feminine and hence the sentences are used.

but in the other 2 sentences why'jarhali di' and 'jorh kerhe de' is used

ANSWER

yam is am or have in Pashto but only and only for the pronoun I

ZA SARHAY YAM I AM A MAN

ZA TALAY YAM < I HAVE GONE /BUT NOTE THAT HERE IS NO OBJECT

IF WE SAY I HAVE READ A BOOK THEN NOT SUBJECT BUT THE OBJECT WILL DETERMINE THE SENTENCE AND WE SAY ma kitab lwastalay day

here day is for book not I or ma and za also changes to ma

remember

yam for I

yoo for we

day for he

da for she

dee for they

ye for you sing.

yai for you sing. when we want to say I am , we are , he is , she is, they are, you are , you are as we are men , mong sarhee yoo

another use of these are in present perfect tense for have and has. when there is no object as all the above sentences like

I have gone za talay yam

I have gone to peshawar za pekhawar ta talay yam (remeber peshawar is not object)

but if object as I have eaten meal here meal is object so no yam but da for dodai and we say ma dodai khwarhali da

In the INCORRECT sentences above

I have drawn........Ma aks jorhali yam INCORRECT< Ma aks jorh kerhe de< aks is object and thus day( de is the same as day, Pashto script problem) t yam as here aks determines not I.

The pure word for Photo in Pashto is Inzoor not aks or tasweer.

I have cooked food..ma dodai pakhali da INCORRECT< Ma dodai pakh kerhe da < HERE VERB PAKHAWAL TO COOK CHANGES TO A COMPOUND VERB PAKHA KARHI DA AS IN PRESENT PERFECT TENSE THERE IS NO WORD IN PASHTO LIKE PAKHALI DA . PAKHAWAL IS NOT COMPOUND IN PRESENT INDIFINITE TENSE .

I have cried.ma jarhali yam > INCORRECT Ma jarhali di/ THIS IS ANOTHER IMPORTANT POINT . HERE THE VERB JARHAL IS USED IN THE SENSE OF AN OBJECT/OBJECTIVELY AND A PLURAL OBJECT SO DEE . HERE THE SUBJECT I DOES NOT DETERMINES BUT THE VERB JARHAL WHICH IS USED OBJECTIVELY . SIMILAR IS THE CASE WITH ALL SUCH VERBS AS

KHANDAL TO LAUGH

I HAVE LAUGHED < MA KHANDALEE DEE

^bandawal (instead of badawal)......Some people use pore ka (close it)

To open (khlasawal/barsera)- Example Darwaza/tamba khlas/bersere ka...

Oooseeedal is used more like to say I live here-Za dalta usegam (i live here)

And To stay-Pate kedal...Za delta pate kegam (i stay here)

Manana Saifullan for the corrections....

I have sat-Ze kenasteli yem.....as i would sit on something...that somethingcould be chair...so the chair (object) determines the ending of the verb in past perfect tense....so ma pa kursai kenastali da

the lagya tha i use is for present continous tense....where the work is in the process of being done....i havelearned that usually the present continuos is spoken as simple present...but i write the sentences here as they were taught here like this by Osho....

Yousafzai Pakhtun, there is nothing to mind. Your corrections are something we can all learn from. I see though, most of the points you have addressed are gender related. I myself was confused as to which gender to write it in. Of course, Spogmai being a woman it should have been feminine, but I avoided it in that post (wrong of me). And others also related to the object we were referring to, which too, I wasn't sure of, for instance 'ma paida ke' would have been written differently had I had something in mind to form my sentence against. Either way, thank you for your additions. They're always welcome. Allah Bless you =)

Have studied in the room I am referring to about Present Tenseplease let me know if I am correct and if the following makes sense..as I got confused here.

PRESENT IMPERFECT TENSE

Transitive auxiliary it mentions ---kawal----to do

To cookpakhawal (the 1st component ends in a consonant like pakh then the k is dropped as in awredal)

To examine --- mayna kawal (someone does the work).....1st component ends in vowel to k isnt dropped also as in ooda kedal, khabrey kawal, etc.

Intransitive auxiliary----kedal (changes to kegam, kegee)-----to become

get blocked-----bandagee
gets ripe----pakhegee
gets close---nezdey kegee
gets sold-----khartsegee
both above, endings in vowel or consonant determines

Present Perfect TENSE

Transitive auxiliary, whether last component ends in vowel or consonant

it will be Karh..like pakh karhi da..Mayna Karhi da, zda karhi da (only transitive determines the end i.e when there is an object present)

In Intransitive whether last component end in consonant or vowel then the auxiliary is sha.as in taw sham, ter sham, nizdey sham, etc.(only intransitive determined the end)

My practice for Present Tense....till we start with past Tense....
Please correct the following...have used somethings new that i learned like weak possessive noun and future tense...please correct them to help me learn better...
Manana..

Asad daktar dey…..Asad is a doctor.

Hara wraz hagha roghantoon ta zee…everyday he goes to the hospital.

Oos hum hagha roghanton ta larh shey….now too he has gone to the hospital….
The Pashto word for hospital is not Roghantoon, its Roghtoon.

Oos hum hagha roghtoon ta wlarey.

Mor pa kor ki dey….mother is at home….
Zma mor pa kor ki da

Biya ba yaw ghanta na dama kawee….then she will rest for an hour..
Ghanta is not the Pashto word for hour, I believe its sa-at at least we use sa-at. Ghanta is used in Urdu.

Baba jaan khpl kamrey ki dama kawee….baba jaan is taking rest in his room..
In Pashto, we use ځاى ,خونه ،كوټه for room. Not Kamra. Kamra is again Urdu.

Da khat malgari ye da para dey awo pa pukhtu ki likaley dey….the letter is for his friend and is written in pashtu…..(tried to use weak possessive noun, ‘ye’)
I would have wrote it as, Da khat ye de malgarey da para dey aw pa Pashto ki likal sawey dey.

University ye kor la der nezey dey……Her university is very close to home..(tried to use weak possessive noun ‘ye’)
It should, Pohantoon tai kor NEZHDEY dey

Dodai yawadzay dodai khwree awo so waqt na tv goree…..they eat food together and watch tv for sometime….
If they eat together why did you write that they eat alone?
It should have been, Dodhai yawzay sara khorey oh bya da lazh waqt dapara tv goree.

Past indefinite tense/Simple Past Tense

This tense is quite complicated in Pashto. Therefor more concentration is required.

After reading the lesson please write your own sentences or a paragraph in Pashto with translation using Simple Past Tense

Please read the following sentences

I come< za razam <present indifinite tense

I have come <za raghalay yam <present perfect tense

I came < za raghlam <past indifinite tense

We see that the masdar ratlal to come takes diffrent shapes as razam, raghalay yam, and raghlam. The form raghalm is in Past indifinite tense

Some more examples of past indifinte tense

I wrote a letter <ma yaw khat oolikalo
we wrote letters <mong khatoona oolikal
he wrote a letter< hagha khat oolikalo
she wrote a letter< haghay khgat oolikalo
they wrote letters<haghoi khatoona oolikalo
you wrote a letter< ta khat oolikalo
you wrote leters < taso khatoona oolikal

oolikal may also be written and pronounced as walikalo

Other examples

masdar tlal to go

I went< za larham
we went <mong larhoo
he went< hagha larh
she went < hagha larha
they went < haghoi larhoo
you went < ta larhay
you went< tasoo larhai

Some questions general discussion

Question
I'm having a bit of problem with Past indefinite tense..

they wrote letters<haghoi khatoona oolikalo < shouldn't it be .. Haghoi khatoona uleekal?

And this one they went < haghoi larhoo.. can we also say it as > Haghoi larhal? This is the way we say it. Please explain

I ate food > ma dodai ukhwarha
He/she ate food > hagha dodai ukhwarha
We ate food > moong dodai ukhwarha
They ate food > haghoi dodai ukhwarha
You ate food > ta/taso dodai ukhwarha

Please tell me if my above sentences for Past indifinite tense are correct

Answers

ulikal and oolikalo
larhal and larho
both are correct . Here is a bit difference of dialect, accent and intonation. the last o shows stress which some Pashtuns express and some not .

The sentences are correct.

GRAMMAR IS ALWAYS BORING

Tenses are always the most difficult part of grammar but try to be perseverance. This is the most difficult stage in Pashto learning

I learnt Pashto ma pushtu zda krha
mong Pashto zda krha
hagha Pashto zda krha

mong pekhawar ta larho
hagha pekhawar ta larh
hagha pekhawar ta larha
haghoi pekhawar ta larho

taso pekhawar ta larhai

ta means to

I saw zeb >. maa zeb ukatalo/ukato/ulidalo/ukasalo(to see can be translated as lidal, katal or kasal. the last one is rare.Lidal is more common for To see while katal for To look)
I saw sanam > Maa sanam ukatala/ukata
I saw you > maa ta ukatalay/ukatay
I saw them > maa haghoi ukataloo/ukatal
I saw you (plural) Maa taso ukatalai/ukatai

Question

Please can someone help me out and translate these few things for me
(May be in Quetta accent)
I miss you
you are very sweet
you are my life
mine
yours
I am
you are

There is no big difference in Pashtoof Quetta and Peshawar. I know both the dialects or accents. Please read lesson no.1 in which I have explained the little difference .Basically the difference lies in two letters khin , ge in peshawar and shin , je in quetta for example your sentences can be translated as in red

I miss you za ta yadoom/za ta miss koom
you are very sweet ta khoog/khooj(in Quetta)ye
you are my life ta zama jwand ye
mine zama
yours sta
I am za yam
you are ta ye

EXPLANATION OF PAST INDIFINITE TENSE
WE HAVE TWO KINDS OF SENTENCES IN THIS TENSE

without object as< I went< zah larham
with object as <I watched movie< ma filam ukut , or ma dodai ukharha . or ma Peshawar ulid (here Peshawar is not object but a complement)

za larham, momng larhu, hagha larh, hagha larha, haghoi larhu, ta larhey, taso larhai

Here we see that endings of the verb change which depend on the subject not object

ma filam ukut, mong film ukut, hagha filam ukut, haghay aukut, haghoi filam ukut, ta filam ukut, taso filam ukut

Here endings are the same which depend on the object filam which is singular masculine noun

but ma filmona ukatal , mong filmona ukatal , hagha filmona ukatal etc here filmona is movies , plural
and ma dodai ukhwarha , mong dodai ukhwarha etc here dodai , food/meal is singular feminine noun

Also note that the pronoun zah changes to ma in sentences with object but other persons remain the same

Question
I tried my best to make a few sentencez in past indifinite tense in Pashto za<ma voleed or ma voleed ===== ta voleed =====aga/hagha voleed
mong voleed ============taso voleed =====agoi<haghoi voleed

Answer
der kha/sha
its all right , excellent
agha/aghoi may be written as hagha/haghoi although in spoken Pashto agha/aghoi are also correct
only ma volid not za volid as volid <saw< shows implicit/hidden object as we see some thing thus ma not za
za vlekl==========ta vlekl======aga vlekl
mong vlekl======taso vlekl======agoi vlekl
k!tty
correction ma ulikal or walikal or valikal

okz...so i am back,,,, read and re-read the lesson on Past Indefinite Tense

so its similar to Present Perfect Tense and unlike Present Indefinite where only the subject determines the berb endings .....
presence and absence of object determines the verb endings.....
i came.... za raghlam
we came....mong Raghloo
he came......hagha raghal?????
she came.....hagha raghla
they came.....haghoi rahaloo
you came...ta raghaley
you came...taso raghlai

i read a book......ma yaw kitab oolwalo
i read books....ma kitaboona oolwal

this "oo" has to be in the beginning of every verb?????????

ulikal and oolikalo
larhal and larho.....its mentioned in the lessonthat these both are correct but then in the sentences below,

I wrote a letter <ma yaw khat oolikalo
we wrote letters <mong khatoona oolikal
he wrote a letter< hagha khat oolikalo
she wrote a letter< haghay khgat oolikalo
they wrote letters<haghoi khatoona oolikalo

both are written seperately... one for singular and one for plural...could u clarify this.....
